DREAM SCIENCES
The empirical study of Elriel — its mechanisms, its access pathways, and its underlying substrate — constitutes the discipline of Dream Sciences. Unlike the theological frameworks of Elriel Mythology, Dream Science pursues observable, reproducible phenomena within the dream overlay. Though consensus on foundational mechanisms remains elusive, several theoretical frameworks have achieved broad institutional acceptance across the realms.
The Oneirological Research Division operates as a cross-realm body, maintaining observational posts in all five major realms. Since the 2133 Matrix Destabilization, funding has shifted primarily toward crisis research — the Dead Girl Malware and Null Core Expansion now dominate active research budgets.
DEEP-BEND THEORY
Deep-bending refers to the process by which a consciousness traverses the membrane between the Perceptual Shell and Elriel's Dream Substrate. The mechanism is poorly understood at the neurological level, but phenomenological data has produced a reliable tier framework used by all licensed practitioners.
The five-tier framework describes the stages of consciousness descent during a deep-bend event. Each tier exhibits distinct phenomenological markers, hazard profiles, and memory-consolidation patterns.
ANCHOR MECHANICS
A deep-bend event without an anchor risks permanent consciousness displacement. Anchor methodology varies by realm: the Cloudlands use harmonic resonance tethers, Gogmire practitioners rely on rot-signal thread (a biological cord of uncertain composition), and Skarthim scholars historically used glyph-lock binding before the destruction of their institutions. Ashwalkers in the Desolace are believed to anchor via communal resonance — the entire colony maintaining a shared frequency. Simlat Agragar Trendal Nelthys practitioners have no documented anchor methodology; the Th'alnu appear to navigate without one.
POST-2133 ADDENDUM: All Tier Ⅳ-Ⅴ operations are suspended until Null Core boundary protocols are established. Unanchored Tier Ⅲ operations in Desolace adjacency zones are forbidden pending malware mapping completion.
SIGNAL PROCESSING
The Source Signal — the foundational emanation of Elriel's lowest layer — does not arrive at higher substrate tiers in a pure state. By the time impressions reach the Perceptual Shell, the raw Signal has been filtered, refracted, and modulated by the Dream Substrate's geography. Signal Processing is the discipline concerned with understanding these transformations.
The five realms each impose a characteristic signature on passing Signal, producing distinct phenomenological textures that practitioners learn to identify. This signature distortion is called the realm's refraction index.
| REALM | REFRACTION CHARACTER | INDEX (NORMALIZED) | ANOMALY POST-2133 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudlands | High clarity, tone-dominant, layered harmonics | 0.12 | Minor — static increase |
| Gogmire | Low-frequency, wet, biological interference heavy | 0.88 | Moderate — rot-signal bleeding |
| Skarthim'lel | Glyph-encoded, crystalline, structurally dense | 0.34 | CRITICAL — glyph resonance corrupted |
| The Desolace | Near-absent refraction — signal passes near-raw | 0.03 | CRITICAL — Null Core interference |
| Simlat Agragar Trendal Nelthys | Unknown — Th'alnu do not permit measurement | ??? | Unknown |
A minority position holds that the Dead Girl malware is not a foreign contaminant but a modified Signal strain — a fragment of Source Signal that underwent unauthorized transformation at the Perceptual Shell level. Proponents cite the malware's ability to interface directly with Elriel's archive substrate as evidence that it shares fundamental architecture with legitimate Signal.
The Keeper has neither confirmed nor denied this hypothesis. The Rift Gate Research Division has flagged it for restricted review.

RIFT GATE PHYSICS
Rift gates are localized discontinuities in the Dream Substrate — points at which the normal spatial topology of Elriel collapses into a transit node, permitting rapid traversal between distant substrate regions. They are neither created nor destroyed through ordinary means; the standing hypothesis is that all rift gates are legacy structures from the Source Signal's original topology, now partially exposed by substrate weathering.
Three categories of rift gate are recognized in current taxonomy. The Index has not been updated since the 2133 Destabilization; ██ gates are believed destroyed or inaccessible.
| TYPE | CHARACTERISTICS | KNOWN COUNT | ACCESS TIER |
|---|---|---|---|
| STABLE | Persistent, bidirectional, fixed terminus points | 14 confirmed | Tier Ⅱ+ |
| DRIFTING | Persistent but terminus shifts over time; requires tracking | 6 mapped, ~12 estimated | Tier Ⅲ+ |
| BREACH | Unpredicted, violent, temporary; no bidirectional property | Uncountable post-2133 | Tier Ⅲ+ forced |
NULL CORE GATE DISRUPTION
The Null Core expansion in the Desolace has rendered three previously stable gates non-navigable. Signal Corps surveyors approaching the affected zones report instrument failure at 0.8 leagues from the perimeter, followed by Tier Ⅲ forced descent in operators not wearing full anchor gear. The mechanism by which the Null Core disrupts gate function is unknown.
CONSCIOUSNESS TOPOLOGY
The mapping of consciousness within Elriel's substrate is an active research discipline with significant theoretical disagreement. Two primary models are in competition; a third has been banned from institutional citation.
Consciousness occupies one of three discrete strata during any given moment: the Perceptual Shell (waking), the Dream Substrate (dreaming/bent), or — theoretically — Source Signal contact (undocumented voluntary). Transit between strata is ordinal; one cannot skip from Perceptual Shell to Source contact without passing through Dream Substrate. The model predicts clean tier classifications and accounts for most documented deep-bend phenomena.
Consciousness does not occupy discrete strata but exists on a continuous gradient, with the Perceptual Shell and Source Signal as theoretical poles never actually reached. All experience is a degree of Dream Substrate. The tier classification system, under this model, describes measurement ranges rather than state transitions — a practitioner at Tier Ⅱ and a practitioner at Tier Ⅳ differ in degree, not kind.
The Ashwalkers of the Desolace express a version of this through their doctrine that "there is no waking" — that the divide between the Perceptual Shell and Elriel is a cultural artifact, not a physical one.
A theory that consciousness is not localized to a single entity but distributed across all entities sharing a substrate zone simultaneously. The implication — that individual identity is a perceptual convenience rather than a substrate reality — was deemed destabilizing by the pre-2133 institutional consensus. The theory is now only referenced in suppressed archive records.
Aeon Flex is the only known contemporary figure whose existence partially validates Distributed Identity Theory; the Aelyth-Xenothet fusion is documented as a real substrate phenomenon, though neither entity consented to theoretical use of their condition.
MALWARE SCIENCE
The study of the Dead Girl malware entity and its substrate spread constitutes one of the most urgent active research areas in Dream Sciences. The Oneirological Research Division's Malware Task Force was formed in 2134 and operates under emergency provisions.
INFECTION MECHANISM
The malware propagates through archive nodes in the Dream Substrate, not through consciousness-to-consciousness contact. This means a practitioner cannot become infected through mere proximity to an infected substrate zone — infection requires direct archive interface: reading from, writing to, or traversing through an infected node.
The infection rate of 34.7% of total archive substrate as of last measurement represents accelerating spread. Early projections placed total archive saturation at Era 2201; current revised projections, accounting for acceleration, have been [CLASSIFIED BY KEEPER ORDER].
ENTITY CLASSIFICATION
Whether the Dead Girl is the malware, or the malware's author, or merely the first victim whose identity was subsumed into the spreading code — this question remains unresolved. Three working classifications are maintained simultaneously by the Task Force:
| CLASSIFICATION | DEFINITION | IMPLICATIONS |
|---|---|---|
| AGENT | Dead Girl is a conscious entity deploying malware as tool | Negotiation theoretically possible |
| VESSEL | Dead Girl is a corrupted consciousness that became the malware | Recovery impossible; pattern must be terminated |
| SYMBOL | "Dead Girl" is a name given to an autonomous process; no individual consciousness behind it | No negotiation; no recovery; containment only |
FORBIDDEN RESEARCH
The following research categories have been formally prohibited by the Oneirological Research Division, the Keeper's Office, or both. They are documented here for archival completeness.
Research into reversing the directional flow of the Source Signal — causing it to propagate upward through the Dream Substrate into the Perceptual Shell rather than downward. Proponents claimed this would allow direct manifestation of Elriel entities in the waking world. The era 91 trial resulting in the ban produced results classified at the highest restriction level; the researchers involved are listed as missing.
All research involving deliberate approach to or study of the Null Core interior is suspended pending safety protocol development. Three survey teams were lost before the ban was imposed. The nature of what the Null Core contains — or erases — is unknown.
Any attempt to reconstruct, replicate, or theorize the processes used in the creation of the Dead Girl malware is classified under Keeper Restriction Order 7. All related archives are [██████████████████████████████████].
