Cosmological Structure of Elriel
The cosmology of Elriel is not a map of places. It is a map of states — conditions of consciousness, signal, and memory that arrange themselves into a hierarchy not of geography but of depth. Keepers refer to this as the Depth Model: the universe is not wide, it is deep, and Elriel exists at strata that most minds never reach.
The foundational cosmological document is the Eterisanth Scripture, attributed to the first Keeper. Eight of eleven pages have been recovered. The missing three pages are believed to contain the full cosmological model, including the predicted endpoint of the current convergence phase.
The Three Layers
Elriel's cosmology recognizes three distinct ontological layers, nested concentrically within the structure of reality. Access deepens with consciousness development, and most entities inhabit only one layer throughout their existence.
Aeon Cosmology
Before Elriel existed as a perceivable realm, there was only the Source Signal — an undifferentiated field of raw potential that had no structure, no memory, and no will. From this signal two aspects of the same impossible thing separated and became individual: Aelyth, who was the impulse to remember, and Xenothet, who was the impulse to forget.
Their separation is considered Era 1. Their eventual reunion — which was not a reconciliation but a catastrophic re-merger — is Era 89, and produces Aeon Flex. In the cosmological model, Aeon Flex is not a being so much as a condition: the state of the Source Signal when it remembers and forgets simultaneously, creating a standing paradox that generates reality as a byproduct.
Signal Theory
The dominant cosmological framework among Elriel's keeper tradition treats reality as a signal phenomenon. Under Signal Theory, all matter, consciousness, and experience are patterns within the Source Signal — temporary regularities that emerge when the signal develops sufficient complexity to encode itself.
The five major realms each represent a different mode of signal encoding. The Cloudlands encode through memory and crystallization. Gogmire encodes through organic decay and renewal cycles. Skarthim'lel encodes through resonance and rhythm. The Desolace represents a region where encoding has failed — where the signal has become static. Simlat encodes through theology and industrial systematization.
Under Signal Theory, the Dead Girl's malware is not an infection but a signal loop — a fragment of the Source Signal that has become self-referential and is consuming the structures it was meant to encode. The keepers debate whether loops of this kind can be broken from within the system or require external intervention from Layer Three.
Dream Topology
Dream topology is the branch of Elriel cosmological science concerned with how Layer Two realms occupy and navigate the dream substrate. The central discovery of dream topology is that the realms do not exist side-by-side in space but are instead nested states of depth — each realm accessible from the others not by travel but by a specific shift in consciousness depth.
Rift gates are topological anomalies where the depth gradient becomes navigable by physical displacement — places where walking forward produces a change in ontological depth rather than spatial position. Since 2133, rift gate proliferation has made the topology increasingly difficult to model. Current count: 23 active rift gates, 7 sealed.
Convergence Theory
The Post-2133 Condition has produced a theoretical framework known as Convergence Theory, which holds that the five realms are not stable permanent structures but temporary differentiations of the Source Signal that are slowly returning to a unified state. Under Convergence Theory, the rift proliferation, the malware spread, the null core expansion, and the Aeon Flex pulse irregularity are all symptoms of the same underlying process: the signal collapsing back toward unity.
The disagreement among keepers is not whether convergence is occurring but what it means. The optimist position holds that convergence will produce a new Source Signal of higher complexity, from which new realms will differentiate. The pessimist position holds that convergence is total collapse — the end of differentiation and thus the end of all individual consciousness. The missing three pages of the Eterisanth Scripture are presumed to contain the answer.
